Verdejo's roots in Rueda go back to the 11th century when the grape was used to make strongly-oxidized, Sherry-like wines. At the turn of the 20th century, the higher-yielding Palomino grape replaced Verdejo, causing it to temporarily fall into obscurity. In the early 1970's, famed Rioja producer Marqués de Riscal enlisted the help of renowned French oenologist Émile Peynaud, to search for a region where he could produce a fresh, modern-style white wine that was different than the tradional, oaky white Rioja made from the Viura grape. Using up-to-date viticultural and wine-making techniques, they began producing an appealing white made from the Verdejo grape that was distinctly Rueda.
The first thing to notice about this 100% Verdejo is the freshness of fruit — its jumps out of the glass. Beautiful exotic fruit aromas of mango, peach and apricot intertwine with notes of white flowers and a touch of grass. The Perla Maris is a medium-bodied white with a wonderful balance of vibrant fruit and minerality. It coats the palate with amazingly fresh fruit flavor joined by a nice acidity that carries through to the finish, beckoning you to take another sip. This will be the perfect complement to any summer salad, grilled fish (Mahi Mahi) with a mango chutney, or roasted chicken.
