In 1992, Milan and Jean Stoyanov purchased what was formerly Charles Coury Vineyards, renaming the property David Hill, which, along with Wine Hill, was the vineyard's original name. The Stoyanov family set out rebuilding the historic farmhouse, as well as resurrecting the original vineyards while also planting another 20 acres on the property. In 2000, they released the first vintage of David Hill. Today, the estate is a certified LIVE vineyard (Low Input Viticulture and Enology), Salmon Safe and a B Corporation (a business thats meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose). The vineyard team, led by Mike Kuenz, farms organically with minimal inputs, while Chad Stock, who joined the team in 2019, makes wines as naturally as possible, showing the purity of fruit from this historic vineyard.

First, a quick note on the 2020 vintage in the Willamette: Wildfires effected much of the valley, with smoke taint an issue for many growers and producers, although the Tualitan Hills in the northern Willamette Valley where David Hill is located were fortunately free from contamination. Overall, for David Hill, 2020 produced wines with wonderful ripeness and expression that makes for a seriously age-worthy vintage. The Estate Pinot Noir is fermented with native yeasts in small lots, separated by clone and vineyard block, aged for 10 months in neutral oak barrels, then blended and bottled. One of the most striking characteristics of this wine is its color: a deep garnet with brilliant ruby reflections. The nose shows classic Willamette fruit definition with a lovely mélange of cherry, pomegranate, raspberry and strawberry with notes of fresh earth and spices. The palate displays wonderful depth with refined tannins and lively acidity that frame the fruit flavors to perfection as they lead into a elegant, lengthy finish. You can drink now, thought the wine has enough concentration and structure to age for another 5-10 years. This is an incredibly impressive Pinot Noir in its own right, while the mysterious history of its vineyard only adds to the wine's allure.
