The original building at Château du Lort was built in the 17th century and modified during the 18th and 19th centuries. The name "Lort", comes from the word "ort", meaning an enclosed piece of land. In 1984, the Castel family took over ownership of the Château, embarking on a program of renovation and technical modernization. A further extensive overhaul of the property took place in 2006 with the building of a new, state of the art winery, cellar and tasting room, as well as making Lort a totally energy self-sufficient Château. The property stands on 50 hectares, of which 21 are planted to vines (65% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc) on a mix of several different soil types: clay, limestone, sand and gravel. Each vine is planted to its ideal soil type, adding their unique complexity to the wine's final blend.
Château du Lort is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc aged in French oak barrels in the circular winery of the Château. In the glass, the wine sits a wonderful purple color with ruby highlights. On the nose, aromas of freshly picked ripe raspberry, plum and vanilla intertwine with a subtle spice note. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and rich with firm, mouth-coating tannins, a soft acidity and excellent concentration of flavor. Those red fruit flavors are balanced with a sweet pipe tobacco undertone and an earthy minerality that dominates the long, dry finish. One of the great things about Château du Lort is the balance of fruit, oak and body: nothing is out of place and every aspect compliments each other perfectly to create a seamless drinking experience. This wine is ideal for juicy cheeseburgers or a flat-iron steak served with fried potatoes.
