Château Vrai Canon Bouché is one of the top properties in Canon-Fronsac, an appellation located on Bordeaux's right bank, just west of Libourne. The 12 hectares of vineyards are planted to 64% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec at the peak of the Canon-Fronsac plateau. Vrai Canon Bouché's terroir is unique: The property was once a limestone quarry, with much of the exposed limestone breaking down into clay, resulting in a complex mix of clay and limestone soils. Additionally, the vineyards are located on slopes at relatively high elevations. All vineyards are farmed sustainably with organic certification scheduled for 2022.
The 2018 Château Canon Bouché is a blend of 65% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec vinified in cement tanks and aged for 12-15 months in a mix of new, 1-year-old and 2-year-old French oak barriques. Deep purple in color with a heady perfume of ripe cassis, blackberries and plums intermingled with oak spice and notes of graphite. On the palate, the wine is dense and full-bodied with rich, mouth-coating tannins balanced by an energetic core of fruit and vibrant minerality. Drink now or age a further 5-10 years.
