Azienda Agricola Gianfranco Bovio - "Il Ciotto" - Barbera d'Alba 2021
In the 1970's, Gianfranco Bovio renovated 6.5 hectares of his father's estate vineyards in La Morra, Barolo, including two prestigious Barolo Crus: Arborina and Gattera. Today, Gianfranco's daughter, Alessandra and her husband Marco run the estate. The company's philosophy is rooted in tradition and terroir from tending their vines to their meticulous work in the cellar. In addition to their winemaking, Gianfranco and Alessandra are among the most well-known and respected restaurateurs in Piedmont. Together, they have managed the iconic Belvedere for over 40 years, and recently opened their own restaurant, simply called Bovio, to much acclaim.
The Bovio Il Ciotto Barbera d'Alba is made from 100% Barbera grown in the calcareous clay soils of La Morra, Barolo. To emphasize the freshness of the varietal, all grapes are fermented and aged in stainless steel before being bottled, unfiltered. In the glass the wine sits a deep ruby color with purple highlights. The nose is pristine, emitting enchanting aromas of pomegranate, cherry and a whiff of blackberry alongside an engaging floral note. On the palate, the Bovio Barbera is focused and fresh with a crisp acidity and light, fruity tannins that give the wine an energetic lift while enhancing its fabulous fruit concentration. Enjoy with grilled pork chops served with gnocchi or polenta.
