The Rodríguez family has been growing grapes and making wine in Ribeira Sacra for generations, though it wasn't until 1991 that the family started their own adega. Today, Pedro Rodríguez runs their estate, Guímaro, which is both a local Gallego word that means rebel, and the nickname of Pedro's grandfather. Working closely with the famous Bierzo winemaker Raúl Pérez, Pedro farms his old-vine Mencía, Godello and other local varieties organically on the treacherously steep slopes along the River Sil. He utilizes old-fashioned winemaking techniques: wild yeast fermentation, foot-treading in open-top containers, low sulfur and aging in used barrels. The results are expressive and terroir-driven wines with energy, freshness and complexity.
This tinto is 100% Mencía from vines that average 40 years of age from multiple plots in and around Amandi — the top sub-zone of Ribiera Sacra — on soils of slate, granite and sand. Unoaked to showcase the aromatic purity and zest of the grape and terroir, this is brimming with lush red fruits and a supple texture. A refreshing, easy to drink red: delicious on its own, and versatile on the table. Perfect for casual fare!
