Corte Figaretto is a family-run estate located between Paiano and Quinto in the heart of Valpantena, a valley located just north of Verona. The wines are made by Mauro Bustaggi; his wife, Patrizia, is the cellar master; and Mauro’s brother is the vineyard manager. The sub-region of Valpantena benefits from a Mediterranean climate with cool summer breezes from the Lessini mountains which mitigate the day's heat, allowing for a large diurnal temperature difference that retains freshness in the wines. All fruit is hand-harvested and fermented, plot by plot.
Corte Figaretto is certified sustainable through Valpolicella's RRR (Reduce, Retrench, Respect) initiative that focuses on a producer's economic, environmental and social impacts. The goal of the project is for partners to carefully and meticulously apply agricultural and socioeconomic best practice to safeguard the agroecosystem while meeting the health requirements of workers and members of the community. It requires such steps as reduced use of chemical fertilizers and herbicides; waste reduction and economic efficiency in the winery, cellar, vineyard and transport; respecting the rights and conditions of workers; communicating with the community regarding vineyard treatments or other areas of concern; and transparency in all the above practices.
Corte Figaretto's Altarol Valpolicella is a blend of Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, Oseleta, Corvinone and Croatina spontaneously fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. The grapes grow on calcareous-clay soils in the Valpantena sub-region of Valpolicella. The wine is named after the family's local church, Altarol. In the winery, the fruit is handled gently thanks to a gravity flow system, which preserve the aromatic elegance and sophistication of all Figaretto's wines. In the glass, the wine shows a brilliant mid-ruby color with lovely garnet highlights. The nose is expressive with aromas of fresh cherries, red plums, black raspberries and violets. On the palate, the wine is bright and energetic with slim, vibrant tannins and an invigorating, though well-integrated, acidity that endows the wine with lift and length, though not at the expense of depth and concentration. Succulent, inviting and incredibly easy to drink, this is what Valpolicella is all about. Enjoy with fresh pasta dishes, marinated flank steak or assorted cheeses.
