Matteo Vaccari and Maddalena Fucile are two young winemakers who have extensive experience in Tuscany and beyond. After graduating with degrees in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Florence in 2017, the duo honed their winemaking crafts at Tuscany’s Tenuta degli Dei, Fontodi and Isole Eolie. After, they both went to America to work with two of California’s top winemakers, Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr, at their California and Oregon-based estates Domaine de la Cote, Sandhi, Pence Ranch, and Evening Land. Ultimately, Maddalena returned to her family estate, Cigliano di Sopra, in northern Chianti, where she and Matteo restored the property's old vineyards through organic and biodynamic farming. Today, they farm seven hectares on sandy-clay soils rich in limestone. All fruit is hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in wood.
The Cigliano di Sopra Chianti Classico — 100% Sangiovese — pours a beautiful ruby red emitting gorgeous aromas of dark red berry and stone fruits mixed with notes of purple flowers, mint and herbs. The palate offers intense fruit flavors of black raspberry and ripe cherry accented with a touch of bittersweet chocolate. The mid-palate is sensuous and elegant, highlighting a perfect amount of acidity that clings to a crushed stone minerality and supple tannins. The finish is bright, complex and lengthy. Enjoy with hearty pasta dishes or any roast meats.
