Born in Sri Lanka, raised in Somerset, England, Sean O’Callaghan came to Chianti via the Nahe in Germany in 1991. He was lured by fellow Englishman John Dunkly, who owned Riecine in Gaiole in Chianti. Until 2015, Sean made some of the most compelling Sangiovese on the planet at Riecine; since, he practices his craft at Tenuta di Carleone in Radda in Chianti where he was hired by owner Karl Egger to help transform the small artisanal winery by making classical Sangiovese with Sean's unique imprint in the vineyards and cellar.

Tenuta di Corleone, founded by the Egger family in 2012, is the project of Senator Karl Egger and Sean O'Callaghan, known as ll Guercio (one-eyed rascal) since he is blind in one eye. The estate, located in Radda in Chianti, consists of 100 total hectares of wooded hills, small rivers and fertile plains. The vineyards are planted to mostly Sangiovese on a number of different plots and soil types scattered across 20 hectares, with a further 10 hectares of olive trees, many of which are over 60 years old. Organic and biodynamic principles are utilized throughout with nothing added to the wines. The results have been some of the most stunning Sangiovese wines made in Chianti Classico today.

Uno is made of 100% Sangiovese from the bet selected parcels and grapes of the vintage. Fermented with native yeasts and partial whole-bunches in concrete and open-top bins, macerated for 40-60 days and aged for 18 months in 10% new tonneaux, the rest in a mix of concrete and steel. Light ruby in color with intoxicating aromas that really showcase the finer, elegant side of Sangiovese: flowers, ripe stone fruits and fresh berries. On the palate, the wine is incredibly structured with powerful tannins though balanced by elegant concentration of tangy red fruits and zipline acidity that carries the wine through to a long, complex finish. You may drink now, though there is enough structure and concentration to age for another decade. A fabulous Sangiovese!
