Weingut Bürgerspital, a founding member of the VDP, is an estate with more than seven centuries of winemaking history and tradition. The Franken estate is located in Würzburg and is comprised of over 120 hectares of vines: Silvaner, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Scheurebe, Muskateller and Rieslaner for the whites and Domina, Pinot Noir and Blaufränkisch for the reds. Today, the estate is helmed by Estate Director Robert Haller who boasts that Bürgerspital’s most valuable heritage is their unique and unequalled portfolio of vineyard sites. For nearly 300 years, Bürgerspital has bottled their best wines in the local historic and traditional round-bellied bottle, the Bockbeutel. Their line of Gutsweine is bottled in the Rhine flute-shaped bottles.
Bürgerspital’s Rieslaner Spätlese is a chameleon… delicious with any aspect of a meal. The nose is full of honeyed stone and tropical fruits. On the palate, flavors of ripe peach, white apricot and pineapple are supported by an ultra-fine acidity and an underlying, subtle minerality. The mid-palate is creamy and opulent, but remarkably fresh… the sweetness is pleasant, not cloying. Enjoy as an aperitif or for dessert, but also lovely with rich, white meat dishes, as well as spicy offerings.
