Julian Haart produced his first vintage in the Mosel in 2010, though the Haart family have been making wine in Piesport since 1337! Prior, Julian worked with such prestigious winemakers as Egon Müller and Klaus Peter Keller, two of the titans of German wine, honing his skills with the country's best farmers and winemakers. Today, Julian farms 5 hectares of vineyards in some of the Mosel's most prestigious sites: Goldtröpfchen, Ohlisberg and Schubertslay. For Julian and his wife, Nadine, 5 hectares is just about the perfect size: it allows them to conduct all their vineyard and cellar work by hand, keeping everything on a personal level. This can be seen in Julian's wines too, all of which have a very intimate character. Indeed, they are some of the most exciting and delicious Rieslings coming out of the Mosel today, packed with gorgeous fruit intensity and a finely honed acidity that screams of the Mosel terroir. These small production, artisanal wines are real treasures.
Haart's 1,000L is sourced from 25-year-old vines in the Grand Cru Goldtröpfchen vineyard, so called because it is a wine that was, originally, a chosen Fuder – a 1,000L barrel. The importer purchased the entire barrel, and each vintage, he continues to do so. The is a dry-tasting Riesling that is incredibly brisk, tense and refreshing with oodles of high-toned citrus fruits and stark minerality.
