Château Meyney was first planted with vines in 1662, making it one of the oldest vineyards in the Médoc. The hillside vineyards cover a contiguous 51 hectare block overlooking the Gironde River at an elevation of 20 meters. Proximity to the river provides the vines with excellent protection from frosts throughout the year. The soil consists of the traditional Garrone gravels, but Château Meyney also benefits from a three-meter deep vein of blue-clay in the subsoil (the same type of blue-clay found at Pétrus in Pomerol). This subsoil, combined with the slope of the vineyards towards the water, allows for great drainage and is a major reason why the wines of Meyney are so soft and lush. These are wines that easily rival, and surpass, many Classified Growths.

The Château Meyney is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 16% Petit Verdot. The vinification of the wine is top-notch, utilizing modern techniques to craft a wine of superb finesse and power. Deep purple color with lifted, complex aromas of violet, cassis, black cherry, dark berries, tobacco and lead pencil. On the palate, the wine delivers lots of firm, mouthcoating tannins that perfectly frame the juicy fruit flavors and vibrant acidity. There is a strong mineral spine that runs through the wine, becoming quite pronounced on the long, intriguing finish. The Meyney is a wine that beautifully encapsulates the power and concentration of the vintage and is arguably the finest value you can find, not only in Saint-Estèphe, but perhaps in all of Bordeaux. Approachable now, though the wine will show its best after 5-10 years in a proper cellar.

This wine has density and some firm tannins. A spectacular vineyard that faces the Gironde estuary, this estate gives a rich wine that needs some serious aging. Drink this wine, with its black-currant fruits and solid tannins from 2027.

The 2021 Château Meyney is based on 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 12% Petit Verdot, and it's a solid 2021 with its redcurrant, cranberry, green tobacco, and cedar pencil aromas and flavors. It's medium-bodied, has a rather lean, focused texture, ripe tannins, and solid overall balance. A classy, more old school-inspired effort from this château, it has just enough ripeness to keep it interesting and enjoyable. I followed a bottle for multiple days, and it held up admirably. This is a classic drinker to enjoy over the coming decade or so.

Shows a cedary grain that runs underneath gently steeped plum and black cherry notes, while warm earth and tobacco leaf elements run along the edges. Reveals a tangy, sanguine edge on the finish that exposes the vintage's telltale trim side, but this is pretty solid for fans of the old-school style. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2032. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 14,377 cases made, 550 cases imported.
