Domaine Durand is a family-owned estate run by brothers Eric and Joel Durand since 1991. The estate is comprised of 20 hectares of Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier vines spread out over the appellations of Cornas, Saint-Joseph, Saint-Péray and IGP des Collines Rhodanienes. Eric and Joel are firm believers that in order to make great wine, you must have great grapes, and to have great grapes, you must have impeccable vineyards. The brothers work incredibly hard in their different parcels, not only managing the plants, but also maintaining and rebuilding the terraces on which their vines are planted. On these predominantly granitic slopes, and in the hands of these two talented brothers, the noble grapes they work with find fantastic expression.
Eric and Joel Durand's Caprice is made from 100% Viognier (fermented and aged in 80% stainless steel and 20% barrel) showcasing the richness and depth of the varietal. In the glass the wine shows an alluring gold color. Soaring aromas of white flowers, spice, peaches and apricots explode after a few swirls, intoxicating the senses. On the palate, the Caprice Viognier is exquisitely balanced with a textural richness and energetic fruit profile that leads into a spicy, fruity finish. The fine line the Durand Brothers walk with this wine is amazing: it is not blousy, fat or alcoholic, yet still shows the incredible originality and intensity Viognier is known for in the northern Rhône. It is also an amazing value! The Caprice possesses great versatility with food, especially spicy dishes... Try with Southern-style shrimp and grits, pad Thai or lemon pepper chicken.
