Quinta das Bágeiras — a family-run estate — is located in Bairrada in north-central Portugal. The property first began bottling under their own label in 1989 with only 12 hectares, though today has grown to 28 hectares spread over 10 different vineyard plots grown on sandy, clay-limestone soils. Currently, the estate is run by Mario Sergio Alves Nuno and his son Frederico — the third- and fourth-generations — who make classic wines using traditional winery practices. The father/son duo crafts terroir-driven wine that are full of character with tremendous aging potential. They strive to produce wines that that are uniquely Bairrada.
The Quinta das Bágeiras Tinto Reserva is a 60/40 blend of Baga and Touriga Nacional fermented whole-cluster in large wooden barrels, then racked and aged in old barrels for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered. This Reserva pours a deep purple color with bluish highlights in the glass. The wine displays a brooding nose of dark berry and stone fruit kissed with baking spice. The palate is medium-bodied and rich offering flavors of spiced blackberries, currants and plum, balanced by mellow acidity and firm tannins. The finish is long, dry and complex. Enjoy with grilled red meats or wild game.
