Inès Lauverjat founded her domaine in 2017 when she was only 23 years old. She comes from a family of winemakers in Sancerre, though as a teenager she did not think the farming life was for her. However, while at business school in London, Inès interned at wine import company, where her experience sparked a change of heart. She realized that starting her own domaine would allow her to control all aspects of her business, from vine to bottle to sales, marketing and strategy. With newfound excitement, she decided to further her viticulture studies in Beaune. In 2017, she was able to purchase a tiny 2.5 hectare vineyard, Les Rossignols, at an altitude of 300 meters with clay-limestone soils in her village, Menetou-Ratel. Much of the vineyard was in shambles, so with the help of her parents, Inès replanted large plot of vines while also building her own cellar. With inspiring effort and unwavering dedication, Inès is making stunning Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir that we are delighted to feature at the Princeton Corkscrew Wine Shop!
The first wine Inès ever made — even before her delicious Sauvignon Blancs — was actually a Sancerre Rouge, in 2017. Her Pinot Noir style is one of freshness, drinkability and grace. The clay-limestone soils, combined with vinification in stainless steel and aging in tank and a small percentage of old oak barrels, helps her craft this ebullient Pinot. In the glass the wine shows a light ruby color with garnet highlights. The nose is wonderfully expressive with explosive aromas of fresh cranberries, strawberries, peonies and pomegranate. The palate is light and fresh with zip-line acidity and sublime, finely etched tannins that perfectly frame the juicy fruit and mineral flavors as they flow into a refreshing, vibrant finish bursting with flavor. This is an absolutely gorgeous example of Pinot Noir, not just from Sancerre, but anywhere in the world. Enjoy with a mushroom ragoût, seared tuna steaks or a selection of pâté and artisanal cheeses.
