Early in the 20th century, Manuel Francisco Ramilo devoted much of his family's land in Lisboa to wine production. Subsequent generations focused on family business on the distribution and marketing of wines from other regions, and the vineyards of Ramilo were abandoned along with many others in Lisboa. Four generations later, brothers Pedro and Nuno Ramilo left their comfortable lives to rebuild the family estate and their vineyards on the Lizandro River Slopes and the sandy properties of Colares, saving the old vines and replanting new ones. The Casal do Ramilo estate is located in the mountainous terrain between the famous hills of Sintra and Mafra. The estate covers 50 acres of land on rocky soils and a unique microclimate which allows their wines to reach a balance and elegance not always achieved in other parts of Portugal. Ramil's Vinho Tinto is a blend of Touriga Nacional and Aragonez, best paired with red meat dishes and intense flavored cheeses.
