David Moret is the name that always comes to mind when I think of the top producers of white Burgundy. He works exclusively with Chardonnay in the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, crafting wines that show the delicate nuances and elegance of this grape. David has always been true to the terroir he works, using biodynamic practices and an exceedingly careful approach not only in the vineyard, but in the cellar as well, creating wines that are true expressions of the land from which they come. He ferments and ages all his wines in French oak barrels, imparting a depth and concentration seldom seen outside a handful of great producers. I have always marveled at how he is able to combine this intensity with his emphasis on precision, tension, minerality and freshness. It is a balancing act even the most accomplished tightrope walkers would envy!
Les Genevrières is one of the top three Premier Cru vineyards in all of Meursault, producing wines that can rival some of the best in the Côte de Beaune. The name "Genevrière" means "Juniper", and the vineyard is called that because of the many juniper bushes that used to line the hills surrounding the vines. Like juniper berries, Moret's Les Genevrières is extremely aromatic with intense ripe stone and tropical fruits balanced by the perfect amount of high quality French oak. The acidity is fresh and inviting, propping up the rich flavors perfectly and leading into an elegant and powerful finish.
