The Benoni Pinot Noir comes from the Red Hill Douglas County, a single-vineyard AVA wholly contained within the Umpqua Valley AVA. Vines sit between 800 and 1,200 feet (245-365 m) and do not benefit as much from the protection of the Coast Range, resulting in cooler growing season temperatures. This AVA is dominated by iron-rich, red volcanic Jory soils, which were formed from the uplifting of ancient volcanic basalt. They are mostly deep and considered premier wine grape growing soils. Wines from this region tend to be leaner with more structure compared to other AVAs within southern Oregon. All the Pinot Noir fruit is destemmed and fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of fruit.
Winemaker Anne Sery approached the 2023 vintage with both excitement and caution, navigating a season full of dramatic shifts. Budbreak arrived late, similar to the cool 2011 vintage, but what followed was entirely different: warm, sunny weather with timely rain carried the vines through bloom and fruit set in record time. A warm dry summer escalated ripening but September rains brought balance, mitigating drought stress and minimized fire risks. The result? Pinot noir grapes with vibrant acidity, moderate sugars, and exceptional balance—a testament to the resilience of both the region and its growers.
The 2023 Benoni Pinot Noir from Red Hill Douglas County delivers on this promise of balance and vibrancy. It blasts right out of the bottle with aromas of perfumed red berries, delicate florals, and a hint of spice. On the palate, juicy raspberry and bright blackberry flavors take center stage, evolving with layers of complexity. Spice and floral undertones weave through a fresh, elegant finish. It’s just a pleasure to drink, fine and high toned. Benoni Pinot Noir is a quintessential expression of Red Hills Douglas County, offering a great deal and fresh perspective on Oregon’s winegrowing future. A charming, fresh Oregon Pinot to enjoy with grilled salmon or a classic roast chicken.
