The Cheysson family have owned their estate since 1868, when Émile Cheysson acquired the property. Previously, the Monks of Cluny Abbey owned the land. They cleared the hills to plant vines, established a priory, and in the 17th century, built a cellar that is still used by the Cheysson family today. Currently, the vineyards cover 26 hectares, mostly in Chiroubles, on a mosiac of different sandy and granite soil types with colorful local names: Côtes Rôties, Grille midi and Les Roches. Jean-Pierre Large has managed the estate for the Cheysson family for the last 20 years, making a name for himself as one of Beaujolais' most prestigious vignerons. The wines he crafts at Domaine Cheysson are known for their aromatic purity and pristine quality of fruit, which is no surprise after learning his motto: "Fruit, glorious fruit!"
Chiroubles is the highest-altitude Beaujolais Cru, known for producing the lightest and most refreshing wine of all the ten Crus. Jean-Pierre's aromatic and fruit-forward style is readily apparent from the first intoxicating inhale to the final, luxuriant sip. In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant garnet hue with ruby highlights. The nose is striking, emitting pristine aromas of strawberry, raspberry, peonies and black tea. The palate is snappy and energetic with soft tannins and fabulous concentration of bright red fruit flavors with a complex savory and spicy undertone. The finish is long and elegant, like a silk dress flowing in the breeze. This is textbook Chiroubles: luminous, polished, intricate and utterly delicious. There is so much flavor packed into this wine it is amazing! Enjoy with a wide range of dishes from chicken in tarragon sauce, seared tuna or a beet salad with goat cheese and pecans. Though for me, it is best with a plate of assorted charcuterie and artisanal cheeses. Brilliant!
