Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Graves Grand Cru Classé in the Pessac-Léognan appellation in Bordeaux. Vines have been grown here starting with the Bosq family as early as 1365. In the 18th century, the estate was purchased by George Smith, a Scotsman, who gave the Château its present name. Today, the property is owned by Daniel Cathiard who combined modern winemaking techniques — both in the vineyard and the cellar — and age-old methods to produce one of the top wines of the region. All grapes are grown organically and hand-harvested
The Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sémillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris fermented in French oak barrels 50% of which are new. The wine spends 12 months on the lees in barrels that are made onsite at the Château's cooperage. Pale yellow in the glass with aromas of pomelo, grapefruit, apricot an oak spice. The palate is laser focused with loads of energy and ripe fruit flavors balanced by a zingy, saline minerality and notes of acacia and lime blossom. Long, complex and dynamic. Enjoy with grilled prawns served alongside corn pudding.

One of my favorite whites from the region is the 2019 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, which is mostly Sauvignon Blanc blended with a splash of Sauvignon Gris and Semillon. Textbook notes of honeyed lemon, melon, caramelized grapefruit, and orange blossom give way to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, seamless white that brings solid richness as well as a lively, racy quality that keeps you coming back to the glass. Drink this beautiful white over the coming 15-20 years.

The 2019 Smith Haut-Lafitte Blanc has a taut and focused bouquet with mineral-rich citrus fruit that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is well-balanced with fine acidity, quite intense with Clementine, orange rind and a touch of spice. Lots of extract on the finish with impressive length. Quite delicious. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Compact but with solid range, as the salted butter, verbena and talc notes work well with lemon pith and curd, white peach and gooseberry flavors. Offers a talc hint that works underneath to extend the finish. Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Sauvignon Gris. Drink now through 2028. 2,400 cases made, 250 cases imported.

91-93. Barrel Sample. At this early stage, the Sémillon, which is at the core of this wine, still has an herbal edge as well as richer tropical fruits. As it ages, that crispness will transform into a luscious, ripe wine. Age this wine for several years.
