Located in Savoie, between the Rhône River and France's largest lake, Bourget, lies Domaine Eugène Carrel. Established in the 14th century, today the estate is run by Eugène Carrel, his son Olivier and his son-in-law Sebastien. Their 24-hectares of vineyards are situated at 1,476 feet and planted on steep, southwest facing slopes on the calcareous clay soils of Mont du Chat and Charvaz. Despite their proximity to the Swiss Alps, the climate is surprisingly warm; Jongieux enjoys 2-3 more hours of sun than any other area in the Savoie. The Carrel vineyards are planted with indigenous varietals: Jacquere, Altesse, Gamay and Mondeuse. The majority of Carrel's wines are vinified in stainless steel tanks to maintain freshness, aromas and flavors. A small selection is aged in oak barrels to lend additional depth and structure to the wines.
Eugène Carrel's Jongieux Mondeuse is made from 100% Mondeuse fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. Deep crimson color with aromas of strawberry, blackcurrant and raspberry mixed with spicy notes plume from the glass. The palate shows of soft, supple character buoyed by a refreshing acidity and added floral flavors that lead into an earthy, powerful finish. Enjoy with red meats and Savoy cheeses such as Tomme or Savoy Gruyere.
