| | Maison Tardieu-Laurent Tavel | 2021 Rhône, France 14% ABV | Regular Price: $19 | |
Earlier this year while on my "working vacation" in Miami, I had the great pleasure of spending time with Bastien Tardieu, who, along with his father, Michel, run the highly esteemed Maison Tardieu-Laurent in the Rhône (I even posted about it on social media!!!). We tasted through an extensive lineup of wines from both the northern and southern Rhône, many of which will be arriving in the shop later this year (so keep your eyes peeled). Bastien and I also spent time outside of the tasting patio, getting to know each other on a personal level and discussing many topics from the wine business to fine cuisine to sport and leisure. He is an exceptional young man whose wines I am proud to feature here at the Princeton Corkscrew! Of all the wines we tasted, his 2021 Tavel rosé was quite possibly my favorite. Maybe it was the Miami weather (or the fact that Gigi and I enjoyed sharing a magnum with Bastien and friends on a boat in the ocean) or my abnormal affinity for rosé, but the wine was off the charts delicious! It is also a stunning value for one of the most prestigious rosé appellations in the world and one of the Rhône's top producers, Tardieu-Laurent, a name that lovers of Rhône wine cannot help but get excited about! |
| Maison Tardieu-Laurent Maison Tardieu-Laurent was founded in 1996 by Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent, though for many years the business has been the exclusive domaine of the Tardieu family. Today, it is run by Michel, his son, Bastien, and daughter, Camille. When Michel started the business, he would ask the growers he worked with two questions: which producers in the same appellation wines they liked to drink, and if they had some friends or producers with well-located old vines who might be interested to work with him. The result is an enviable network of “partner vignerons” — farmers with whom the family has long-standing relationships, almost all of whom have enviable holdings of old vines in the northern and southern Rhône’s most prestigious appellations. To this day, this word of mouth and handshake model is still how the family conducts their business. |
Is it a Rosé or a Light Red? The 2021 Tardieu-Laurent Tavel is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Cinsault and 10% Syrah from organically farmed vines that are between 40 and 50 years of age. All grapes are vinified and aged in concrete tanks to ensure the freshness of fruit. Medium scarlet in the glass, this wonderful Tavel emits enchanting aromas of peaches, crushed rocks, white flowers and muddled red berries. The palate delivers exceptional refreshment but also a surprisingly strong build; it drinks with a weight, texture and persistence reminiscent of a light red wine. There's a slight tannic sheen that frames the fruit beautifully, allowing it to cascade across the palate on a mineral spine that flows effortlessly into a bright, energetic finish. What I love most about this Tavel is its versatility: It is great on its own but is also a chameleon on the table, pairing with any array of salads, roasted vegetables, fish, white meat, even sausages and burgers! |
