La Croix Montlabert Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
Château Montlabert
2016
Bordeaux, France
14.5% ABV
Regular Price: $29

Saint-Émilion is without doubt one of the greatest Bordeaux appellations. It is here that the Merlot grape, blended with Cabernet Franc, reaches its apex. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, the first vineyards to be recognized as such. Some of the most famous châteaux in the world are located here: Ausone, Angélus, Pavie and Cheval Blanc to name a few. Yet, Saint-Émilion is also home to excellent values, delicious wines that express the fruit-forward drinkability of Merlot combined with the complexity and intensity these blends can achieve.

One of my favorites is the 2016 La Croix Montlabert, the second label of the Grand Cru Château Montlabert, one of the most overlooked estates in Saint-Émilion. The wine is superb, an exceptional representation of the spectacular 2016 vintage: ripe, lush and rich with marvelous depth and complexity. How this fabulous estate — tucked in between some of the best châteaux in the region — manages to fly under the radar is beyond me, but I'm glad that it does, though I'm not sure for how long. This is truly, a Grand Cru on the rise...

Château Montlabert
Michel Descazes Montlabert founded this picturesque château in the 1700's, when its original function was that of a hunting lodge. Château Montlabert, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, lies on the "Route de Libourne" and is surrounded by illustrious neighbors: Châteaux Cheval Blanc, Clos des Jacobins and Figeac. The vineyards are planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc on 13 hectares over sand with clay, gravel and limestone soils. The Castel family owns the estate, and since 2009 has invested significantly in elevating the status of the château to that of a world-class estate. In 2010, Hubert de Boüard of Château Angélus came on board as the estate's consultant, and working with Ludovic and Maxime Hérault — the château's manager and cellar master — they have improved the precision in the vineyard and the meticulous attention to detail in the cellar. The results are outstanding.

2016 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
La Croix Montlabert, the second label of Château Montlabert, receives just as much care and love as the Grand Vin. The 2016 vintage, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, pours a deep ruby with garnet highlights. The nose is vibrant and expressive with concentrated aromas of red berry fruits, cassis and a touch of vanilla. After some time in the glass, more savory aromas emerge to combine with subtle notes of tobacco to create a truly expressive bouquet. On the palate, La Croix Montlabert is medium-bodied with soft, juicy fruits and a sweet, pipe tobacco mid-palate that picks up notes of creamy espresso, leading to a finish of black cherry and raspberry balanced by a firm acidity. This is an absolutely gorgeous Saint-Émilion Grand Cru and an excellent value, as well. The wine is drinking wonderfully now, but has enough richness and depth to develop in the cellar over the next few years. Enjoy with steak in a red wine sauce, grilled veal chops with herbs or a wild rice and mushroom casserole.
